Bushie’s Li’l Helpers

An excerpt from Gail Collins’ funny column about the speech last night:

“Sure, Obama talked the fiscally responsible talk last night. But he cannot hold a candle to the finance committee’s Max Baucus and Chuck Grassley, the committee’s lead Republican. These guys are really, really, really concerned about balancing the budget. And that seems only fair since they were basically the ones who unbalanced it in the first place when they worked in splendid bipartisan concert in 2001 to pass George W. Bush’s first $1.6 trillion in tax cuts.”

A good read.

The Repubs are concerned about what the Special Interest Groups that finance their re-election campaigns order them to be concerned about. So right now they are concerned about the health insurance and drug industries having to stop robbing sick people literally to death. The Smirking Chimp site is right about that. But you can’t just say “I am on the side of the robbers.” So the best the Repubs can come up with is “It costs too much”– and hoping that people will forget that they have never been in favor of a balanced budget in the past.
